The warm climate of the Costa del Sol, so ideal for enjoying a garden all year round, is also ideal for certain pests that find near-perfect conditions to thrive here. Knowing what to look for —and catching it early— is the best way to stop a small issue from turning into serious damage.

At Mantenimientos El Paraíso we come across these pests every season in gardens and communities across the area. Here are the most common ones and how to prevent them.

1. Red palm weevil

This is the most feared pest on the Costa del Sol, capable of destroying a palm tree within just a few months if it isn’t caught in time. Early symptoms include drooping or wilted central fronds and holes in the trunk.

  • Regular checks on palm tree condition, especially in spring and summer.
  • Preventive treatments recommended for the area.
  • Disinfecting pruning tools between trees.

2. Mealybugs

These affect many ornamental species and show up as white, cottony patches on leaves and stems. They weaken the plant and encourage sooty mould, a fungus that blackens the leaves.

  • Regular visual checks on the most sensitive plants.
  • Treatment as soon as the first symptoms appear.
  • Pruning the worst-affected areas to slow the spread.

3. Aphids

Very common in spring, aphids attack the tender new shoots of many plants and shrubs. Beyond the direct damage, they encourage fungal growth and attract other insects.

  • Checking new growth in spring, when the pest is most active.
  • Early treatment to stop it spreading to the whole plant.

4. Spider mites

These thrive especially in hot, dry conditions. They’re spotted through a yellowish speckling on leaves and, in advanced infestations, small webs.

  • Keeping adequate humidity around the most sensitive plants.
  • Frequent checks during the hottest months.

5. Whitefly

Common on ornamental plants and some hedges, whitefly is spotted as tiny white insects that fly up when leaves are disturbed. It weakens the plant and encourages sooty mould.

  • Checking the underside of leaves, where the pest usually settles.
  • Early treatment to stop the population growing.

Why is early detection so important?

Most of these pests are far easier and cheaper to treat in their early stages. Once damage is already visible to the naked eye, the treatment needed is usually more intensive, and in cases like the red palm weevil, it can already be too late to save the plant.

Communities: the value of regular checks

In communities with numerous plants and palm trees, scheduled regular checks —rather than only reacting to complaints from owners— are the most effective way to catch pests before they spread to other plants.

The difference a professional service makes

Preventing pests isn’t about applying random treatments —it’s about knowing which species are most vulnerable at each time of year and checking the garden with the right frequency to catch any symptoms in time.

At Mantenimientos El Paraíso, pest inspection and prevention is built into our garden and community maintenance across the Costa del Sol, with treatments adapted to each season.
